Der Band behandelt die Kulturgeschichte der Nutzpflanzen und zeigt, wie sich Landwirtschaft und Pflanzenbau von den frühen germanischen Wirtschaftsformen bis zum Mittelalter entwickelten. Im Mittelpunkt stehen die zunächst halbnomadische Lebensweise, der Übergang zu fester Ansiedelung und die schrittweise Verbreitung intensiverer Ackerbaumethoden wie Feldgraswirtschaft und Dreifelderwirtschaft. Dabei wird auch die Rolle römischer Einflüsse und der Austausch mit den Nachbarn des Dekumatenlands hervorgehoben.
