Der Roman schildert die Fahrt von U 217 auf der südlichen Anmarschstraße zur Irischen See und später auf dem Weg zu seinem Operationsgebiet in der nördlichen Biscaya und am Westausgang des Kanals. An Bord ist die gespannte Stimmung eines deutschen U-Boots im Sperrgebiet zu spüren: ein Neuling aus Berlin hört den Prahlereien eines erfahrenen Obermatrosen zu, während das Boot bei schwerer See unterwegs ist und bereits mehrere Schiffe versenkt hat. Zugleich werden die Bedingungen des U-Boot-Kriegs sichtbar, mit Tauchmanövern, feindlichen Bewachungsfahrzeugen und der Sichtung eines Dampfers am Horizont.
