Kurzbeschreibung
Der Roman ist in einem mecklenburgisch wirkenden Dorf um Hohen-Leucken angesiedelt, dessen Nebel, Armut und Krankheiten das Leben der Bewohner bestimmen. Im Mittelpunkt steht das Herrenhaus der Dörfflins, eine alte, kalte und wenig wohnliche Gutsherrschaft, in der Frau v. Dörfflin nach einem kränklichen Leben stirbt. Zurück bleibt Ludwig v. Dörfflin mit den kleinen Kindern, darunter das unruhige Fritzchen und die Zweijährige Gisela, während der Alltag auf dem Gut von Einsamkeit und Erstarrung geprägt ist.
