Der Roman beginnt an der Küste von Rippondale, wo ein Mann bei plötzlich aufziehendem Gewitter und starkem Regen keinen Schutz findet. Eine Frau ruft ihn zu sich und führt ihn in eine versteckte, höhlenartige Zuflucht in der Klippe, von der aus man über das Meer und den steilen Abhang blickt. Dort kommt es zu einem ersten Gespräch über das Wetter, den gefährlichen Ort und ihre Vertrautheit mit diesem Versteck.
