Das Buch beschreibt das Zisterzienserstift Heiligenkreuz in Niederösterreich als Klosteranlage mit romanischer Kirche, barocker Stiftsfront und mehreren Höfen. Es erinnert an die Gründung von 1135 durch Markgraf Leopold III. und daran, dass das Stift trotz Bränden sowie Überfällen in seinem wesentlichen Bestand erhalten blieb. Daneben werden Ausstattung und Sammlungen im Inneren vorgestellt, darunter Altäre, Grabsteine, eine Gemäldegalerie, naturkundliche Bestände und kunstvolle Brunnen und Säulen.
