Kurzbeschreibung
Der Roman spielt am Niederrhein, vor allem am Rhein bei Düsseldorf, in einer regnerischen, feucht-schweren Atmosphäre. Im Mittelpunkt steht zunächst ein Rheinschiffer, der auf einem am Kai liegenden Schleppkahn mit seiner Frau Tring in mundartlicher Rede den verregneten Sonntag und das Schützenfest in Düsseldorf bespricht. Am Ufer hört ein junger Mann den Austausch belustigt mit an und wird als weitere Figur in die Szene eingeführt.
