Der Text schildert die politischen Spannungen in Bayern im Oktober 1923, als Kahr und Hitler um Einfluss konkurrieren und die Presse das Lager immer weiter aufheizt. Zugleich zeichnet er ein Bild Münchens als von Reaktion, Propaganda und sozialer Not geprägte Stadt, in der Arbeitslose und Verarmte zu Hitlers Anhängern zählen. Der Erzähler bewegt sich als Fremder durch diese Umgebung und sucht die Organe der nationalsozialistischen Bewegung auf.
