Der Verfasser schildert seine Wiener Jugend, den Weg über kaufmännische Stationen in Wien, Amsterdam und schließlich die Entscheidung für den Dienst im Kongogebiet. Im Vordergrund stehen Erfahrungen von Arbeit, Gefahr, Krankheit und kolonialem Alltag sowie die Ankunft in Antwerpen vor der Abreise nach dem belgischen Kongo.
