Der Band ist eine deutsche Übersetzung einer dänischen Erzählung und führt in das abgelegene norwegische Kirchspiel Li im Hochgebirge. Geschildert wird eine Reise durch Fjorde, Gebirgsseen und einsame Täler zu verstreut liegenden Höfen, an denen nur wenige Menschen leben. Dabei werden auch die Erzählungen der Bewohner über Elfen, Kobolde und andere Volksglaubensgestalten in diese stille Landschaft eingebettet.
